Born in Portsmouth, Virginia in 1949, Edwards trained as a painter at The University of North Carolina in Asheville, the art rich area of western North Carolina. She draws her creative experiences from working not only as a painter but also in graphics and fiber arts. She currently works out of her studio at The Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Virginia. Present paintings are executed in acrylic and colored pencil they are primarily concerned with the importance of color and its influence and relationship to abstract planes and space. The paintings often suggest a landscape, a figure, or a still-life, but only involving the subject as a vehicle to transport the color relationships.
"There is a place where the abstract takes on the image of the realistic, the painting within the painting, an evolving image developing as the composition grows. To paint for this magic of evolution, that which the subconscious paints energizes, and the artist becomes the vehicle to transport the illusion. My paintings are about this illusion, the planes of color and space and their relationship to the image they create, teh painting you see and the one you imagine."
