Bu Rulei paints to create beauty, and to remember it. In Shanghai where he lived until 1998, Rulei achieved lasting artistic recognition at a young age. He taught drawing and painting for five years at Shanghai University, was published in three different volumes of Chinese Art, and was commissioned to create 100-foot and 115-foot frescoes in Shanghai public buildings. All this was before he was 30 years old.
The beautifully graceful and realistic figurative work of Rulei captures viewers' hearts. His oils of ancient Chinese culture and traditions, still alive in remote areas, glow with the tenderness this modest artist feels for his homeland and people. In these and his other figurative pieces, smooth surfaces, warm, harmonious hues, and accurate detail are characteristic.
In other works such as still life and sports art, Rulei uses complex textures, rich and clear colors and unique perspective. These works fit beautifully int he most traditional settings, however, the unique Rulei look, especially in his dynamic and bold sports art, give them a distinct modern flair. "The painting itself does not represent normal reality...Fish and flowers are symbols of life. I paint them to build a small space belonging to myself, that is an ideal world."
Now residing and painting in the Washington, D. C. area, Rulei has won numerous awards and has paintings in public and private collections across the United States.
