In 1989, after many years of painting solely for his pleasure, Howard Scherer began exhibiting his work at a local gallery. Since that time, Howard's work can be found in collections throughout the United States, Canada, and Switzerland. Howard is currently represented by several fine art galleries located in Virginia as well as the Quinones Gallery of Glenwood, Md. He has had seven solo shows since 1991, including the Twentieth Century Gallery in Williamsburg, Va., sponsored by the Virginia Museum of Art in November 1996, and the National Institutes of Health Gallery in Washington, D. C. in 1998.
Howard's work has been accepted in many juried shows at the Art League, Alexandria, Va.; Maryland Federation of Art, Annapolis, Md.; Strathmore Hall, Bethesda, Md. and several others, in which he has won many awards. Among these awards are several "Best in Show," including the statewide "Maryland You Are Beautiful" contest, an honor awarded by the governor.
Howard's paintings have garnered media attention as well. His work was favorably mentioned in a review of the Landscape Show at the Torpedo Factory by the "Washington Post." Another painting was selected for review by the "Annapolis Capital," as a result of it's inclusion in a juried show at the Maryland Federation of Art. The "Montgomery County Journal" also showcased one of his two award winning paintings at the Strathmore Hall annual Cat Show with a review and photo. Additionally, two of Howard's paintings were selected for publication in a three-page spread in a national trade magazine.
Howard is mainly self-taught in the fine arts. He studied advertising art in his youth and worked for an advertising agency in New York before joining the Air Force. His mediums of choice are pastels and oil. Howard considers his style to be painterly realism, and his work shows the influence of the American Impressionists.
In September 1997, he moved to Lake Worth Florida, where he now maintains his studio. He entered his first Florida juried show in February 1998 and was awarded "First Place." In 1999, he was invited to have a solo show in the Palm Beach Gardens City Hall under the Gardenstart Program. He is currently a member of the Delray Beach Art League and the Lake Worth Art League and has won several awards at shows held by these organizations.
